51ΑΤΖζ student Alexis Nguyen has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar and will receive a $1,250 scholarship.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Coca-Cola Academic Team members will be recognized in both local and statewide ceremonies and internationally during Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention, , to be held virtually April 8-10. Selection of honorees is based on academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community service.

β€œThis is a well-deserved honor for Lexi,” says IVC President John C. Hernandez. β€œShe is one of the most actively engaged students 51ΑΤΖζ and in the community as a member of the Collegiate Student Advisory Council for the City of Irvine. We’re very proud to see her recognized for her hard work.” 

β€œThe Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. β€œWe are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.”

Alexis, an aspiring physician majoring in art history, is currently in her second year 51ΑΤΖζ. She came to the college at the age of 14 and began attending full-time at age 16. Alexis holds eight leadership positions including President of the Honors Program Student Council, Vice President of External Affairs for student government, and Vice President of Fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa. She also serves as one of 116 delegates at the Student Senate for California Community Colleges and was selected by City of Irvine Vice-Mayor Tammy Kim to advocate for student issues on the Collegiate Student Advisory Council.

Of her desire to incorporate her studies in art history into her future profession in medicine Alexis says, β€œI'm empowered to bring back what makes us human: empathy. In my determination to use art to transform people’s darkest pains into beauty, I strive to cultivate a growing movement of empathy where everyone can understand each other as masterpieces that bear far more than what we see at face value.”​
