Dear Students:
Sadly, we are writing about another senseless act of violence. We have been learning about what appears to be a targeted horrific mass shooting that occurred on Saturday evening in Monterey Park that killed 10 people and injured 10 others. In addition, authorities are also investigating another incident in neighboring Alhambra, where thankfully no shooting occurred.
51ΑΤΖζ is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.
I introduced a Land Acknowledgement at the Spring 2021 Presidentβs Opening Session. This was something I had introduced at my former institution and reflects a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) value that should be of importance to any college community. The practice of acknowledging and honoring Indigenous People and the land on which our college was built has been widely embraced and I would like to share this information to emphasize its significance.
IVCβs Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Club hosted an βInclusion and Equity Through Artβ event in the SSC quad on December 7 as part of the clubβs service project. The event offered a variety of creative outlets such as chalk art, canvas painting, and rock art for students to express challenging experiences, particularly microaggressions. The project team selected the theme of the event to support IVCβs Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) efforts which is part of the collegeβs mission.
For Minoush Nikham, engineering isnβt just a career, itβs her passion. And when it comes to getting an education, she says her experience 51ΑΤΖζ is the cornerstone for her accomplishments thus far.
βAt IVC, I learned I could do it,β states the proud engineer.
Before enrolling 51ΑΤΖζ, Nikham began her engineering journey at another local community college. Expecting to launch into an unstoppable career, she quickly found the college wasn't a good fit.
Please take a moment as we honor, acknowledge, reflect, and express our sincere gratitude for, and appreciation of, the peoples, ancestors, and sacred land that we gather upon today.
We honor the ancestral homelands and traditional territories of Indigenous peoples who have been here since time immemorial, and to recognize that we must continue to build solidarity, and kinship, with Native Indigenous communities.
