Her hair was more of a glazed hazelnut than a sweet-potato orange, and her undeniably supportive parents were hardly Miss Hannigan. But as a six-year-old obsessed with the musical Annie, Abby Stein saw herself in the carrot-topped orphan. 

But it wasn’t just the musical’s precocious lead that sparked her passion for performing arts. It was the precision, pageantry and movement – the unbridled spirit of it all. It was fascinating, and Abby intended to be a part of it.

51���� (IVC) has joined a new initiative from the USC Race and Equity Center which brings together leaders from California’s community colleges to address issues related to race and racism. The California Community College Equity Leadership Alliance will use a three-pronged approach to help administrators and faculty leaders learn how to better address the concerns of students and employees of color, who have long cited the persistence of racist policies and attitudes within their institutions.

IVC has joined The #StopHateForProfit campaign that has recently gained momentum across the United States, with an impressive roster of companies both large and small pledging to pause or stop spending their advertising dollars on Facebook platforms.

Imagine trying to read a book full of three-dimensional letters, each one popping from the page in full relief. Now, imagine your mind is a helicopter, circling each and every character, but struggling to perceive the overall picture.

That was high school for IVC student and dyslexia sufferer Colin Carey. It wasn’t that the blades weren’t whirling fast enough – quite the opposite, in fact. Carey was an outside-the-box thinker who would go on to thrive on creative problem-solving in his construction career.

It was while trotting the globe as a technical rep for Xerox that Mohamed Sheikh really began to think about the Sun’s future. Little did he know, he may have been gazing into his ���Dz�’s future, as well.

Bouncing from L.A. to Beijing, to San Francisco and even parts of Africa to attend trade shows, he frequently found himself face-to-face with the latest technological advances. But when he saw what was being done with photovoltaic cell technology, even 25 years ago, he knew solar would be the real game-changer.

Most people transfer from community college to university, not vice versa. But after earning a B.A. in Classical Languages just one year before the 2008 recession, Stephanie Del Rosario saw fewer opportunities opening up for Latin teachers like her, even the ones with master’s degrees.

That’s when the ancient maxim, Audentes fortuna iuvat, or, “Fortune favors the bold,” jumped to mind, and Del Rosario prepared to take a leap of faith.

Many standout 51���� (IVC) students have managed to juggle professional responsibilities with their college experience, staying successful at both even in the face of dramatic change this semester.

One such student, Cody Abril, is ready to transfer to California State University, Fullerton to major in communications with an emphasis in public relations after taking classes 51���� for three years.
