Last Friday, Chancellor Barnes delivered the annual State of the District address 51ΑΤΖζ’s Fine Arts Recital Hall. Dr. Barnes emphasized the district’s commitment to fostering innovation and equity, reaffirming our mission to provide educational opportunities for all as reflected in this year’s theme, Students Are the Heart of Our Mission. She also led a Q&A session with the college presidents, emphasizing the importance of partnerships, career education, and enhanced student support services.

From Stopgap to Gobsmacked: IVC Alum Myron Soyangco’s Community College Experience

Myron Soyangco's journey into higher education began with disappointment. 

After his parents suddenly announced in 2008 that his family would be moving from the Philippines to California, Soyangco had a decision to make. He had just graduated from high school in his home country with a stellar academic record, but it was too late to enroll at a four-year American university as he’d wanted to. His choices were to redo his senior year in high school (β€œand who wants to do that?” he says) or enroll at 51ΑΤΖζ.  

Giving Back While Moving Forward: Steve Salinas’s Path to Success

For third-year 51ΑΤΖζ (IVC) biology and chemistry student Steve Salinas, success is not just about grades β€” it’s about creating opportunities, building connections, and giving back to the community. With plans to graduate this spring with an associate degree in biology (Steve already holds an associate degree from IVC in chemistry), this first-generation college student is well on his way to a career in medicine.

On December 3, 2024, I welcomed over 100 attendees to the inaugural Partners and Pancakes Breakfast at the IVC at ATEP campus, launching our yearlong 40th-anniversary celebration. The event brought together employers, advisory board members, community partners, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to honor IVC’s legacy of student empowerment, workforce innovation, and community impact.

Undocumented Student Success Week (USSW)

Undocumented Student Success Week (USSW) is dedicated to honoring and highlighting the experience of students who are undocumented, underdocumented, DACA-mented, and belong to mixed status families. Undocumented persons bring rich culture, community, and experience to IVC and are invaluable to the fabric of the campus community. We recognize that many undocumented students continue to face significant barriers to employment and financial stability due to their immigration status.
