Various tracks and course offerings for transfer level English:
ENGL C1000 (4 units)
ENGL C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing) is the first semester course in college-level writing.
This course involves:
- Actively reading college-level texts
- Writing essays based on those texts
- Other assignments to support your reading and writing
- Development of academic reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that will help you in other college classes
Class sessions will typically involve:
- Classroom discussion
- Small group work
- In-class writing
- Discussion and review of writing projects with your instructor and peers
Because this is a 4-unit class, you can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours outside of class each week to complete your reading and writing assignments.
ENGL 1000 (0.25 unit) OR ENGL 382 (0.5 unit)

Students taking ENGL C1000 can choose to enroll in IVCβs on-campus Writing Center (ENGL 1000): an optional pass/no pass support course that provides access to one-on-one support for your writing from IVC English professors.
ENGL 382 provides the same benefits as ENGL 1000, but students enrolling ENGL C1000 + ENGL 302 + ENGL 382 are required to enroll in the Writing Center (ENGL 382).
Students who have taken ENGL 1000 or ENGL 382 often find their writing improves more quickly because of the additional support this course provides.
ENGL 1000 or ENGL 382 provide:
- One-on-one assistance on writing assignments from IVC English professors in the on-campus Writing Center
- Access to computers and printers in the Writing Center
- A clean, well-lighted place to work on campus
In order to pass ENGL 1000, you must spend at least 12 hours in the Writing Center and meet with a writing mentor twice over the course of the semester. In order to pass ENGL 382, you must complete 24 hours in the Center and meet with a writing mentor four times over the course of the semester. You can complete your required hours at your own pace any time the Writing Center is open.
ENGL C1000 + ENGL 302 + Writing Center (ENGL 382) (6.5 units) (6.5 units)
ENGL C1000 with support offers ENGL C1000 students extra assistance in developing their writing and reading skills.
ENGL C1000 with support is a 3-course package and you must enroll in all 3 classes:
- ENGL C1000: Academic Reading and Writing (4 units)
- ENGL 302: College Writing Skills and Support (2 units)
- ENGL 382: Writing Conference (0.5 unit)
This course package offers 2 additional units of support for your ENGL C1000 course, taught by your ENGL C1000 instructors, plus support from other IVC English professors in the Writing Center.
In addition to ENGL C1000 and ENGL 382 (see the descriptions for those courses), ENGL 302 provides:
- Additional support to help you understand and analyze your ENGL C1000 reading assignments
- Time in class to draft and to review your ENGL C1000 essays⦠with your instructor and peers
- Activities to develop reading and writing skills and build a strong foundation for your college experience
Because ENGL 302 is a support course, the assignments and activities are all designed to help you succeed succeed in ENGL C1000.
ENGL C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing) + ESL 302 + Writing Center (WR 382) (6.5 units)
ENGL C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing) with ESL support offers WR 1 students extra assistance in developing their writing, reading, and language skills.
ENGL C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing)with ESL support is a 3-course package, and you must enroll in all 3 classes:
- ENGL C1000: Academic Reading and Writing (4 units)
- ESL 302: Language Support for WR 1 (2 units)
- WR 382: Writing Conference (0.5 unit)
This course package offers 2 additional units of support for your ENGL C1000 course, taught by your ENGL C1000 ESL instructor, plus support from other IVC English/ESL professors in the Writing Center. It is designed for ESL students who would like to continue developing their Academic English skills as they enroll in transfer-level writing.
ESL 302 provides:
- Language-based activities to assist you as you refine your Academic English skills.
- Additional support to help you understand and analyze your WR 1 reading assignments
- Time in class to draft and review your WR 1 essays with your instructor and peers
- Activities to develop reading and writing skills and build a strong foundation for your college experience
Because ESL 302 is a support course, the assignments and activities are all designed to help you succeed in WR 1. Keep in mind ESL 302 will not add additional homework; it will assist you with the work you have been already assigned work in WR 1.
